About Clark University

Clark University is a privately owned academic institution in Worcester, Massachusetts. Established in 1887, it was backed by an enormous endowment from Jonas Gilman Clark, a prominent businessman; Clark was one of the first modern research universities in the United States. The university was initially an all-graduate one. The first students were admitted in 1902, and women were first admitted in 1942.

The university offers minors, concentrations, and majors in the humanities, social sciences, engineering, and natural sciences. It permits students to create specializations in their majors and participate in pre-professional training programs. It is known for its geography, psychology, physics, biology, entrepreneurship, and physics courses. It is part of the Higher Education Consortium of Central Massachusetts that allows students to cross-register for courses at other local institutions like Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the College of the Holy Cross.

As a research-oriented liberal arts school, Clark offers substantial research opportunities for its students, particularly at the undergraduate levels, through LEEP project funding. However, it is also renowned for its small-scale environment. It is the second-smallest university ranked as one of the top 66 national institutions by U.S. News & World Report and as one of the 40 Colleges that Change Lives. It is listed as “R2 Doctoral Universities – Research activity that is high”. It was one of the founding members of the Association of American Universities, but it was dissolved in 1999.
